That's a great article.  I'm one of those self taught fly anglers with lots of "bad habits" and yet, I too catch fish.  Odder still, I really enjoy doing it, even if I might be doing it "wrong".  It is a hoot to watch the proper fly fishers edge closer to see what you're doing when you are catching and they aren't.  Of course, it's often the other way around, too.  ;)

I found a quick and simple way to put a loop on the end of the fly line.  It beats a nail knot or those finger-traps.  Here is a link to the YouTube video.

He uses super glue to finish it off, but I used Bohnings Platinum fletching glue from my archery stuff because it is durable and flexible.  I used this on my saltwater outfit and it held up to a 30 inch striper with no problem.
