Yellow/Orange blank from 1970's
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:03:10 AM »
My dad got me my first fly rod in the mid 1970's. It was a yellow/orange colored fiberglass blank, maybe just yellow. I think he got it from Sears and Roebuck but maybe not. Anyone have any idea what the maker was or model of the rod? I'd like to start keeping an eye out for one to replace it since it broke in the early 1980's.

Wright-McGill, Phillipson, Fenwick, Heddon - at one time or another, everybody made yellow glass rod blanks.
I couldn't tell you who made and marked rods for Sears.
It would be really tough to identify a maker without hardware (reel seat, ferrule) photos.
A search on FFR didn't turn up anything immediate, but you might want to peruse the hits

the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is

Knowing our meager financial state at the time and me only being 12 years old, I'm sure it was the cheapest one. I'm thinking probably the Heddon.
The link didn't work, said I was not permitted to use the search system.

My bet would be Eagle Claw.  They were ubiquitous, cheap, and garish back then.

Someone else on another site suggested Eagle Claw as well but also said they thought Heddon supplied Sears so, looks like it was one of those two. Some searching I did on-line revealed that Heddon had a wide range of models. It is highly unlikely that I will be able to find the same rod I had but I may keep an eye out for a cheap yellow/orange Eagle Claw or Heddon just for reminder sake.

That's a good idea to keep in mind Ron. That guy does a really good review.

Thanks,

Thanks Urban, I made the change.
Some mornings I think my body feels that old.

My first fly rod I got at a local hardware store.  It is a HI--Horrocks-Ibbotson.It is a tan-orange color.  in the late '60s and I learnt to fly fish from library books in my backyard.  Still have it.
But I know how you feel about trying to find a rod that "you grew up with".  My first ultra light spinning rod was a red Heddon "Pal".  It was 5 foot 6 inch matched with Mitchell 308.  I watch at yardsales, and from time to time I surf the "bay" looking.
What I have is the memories of hundreds of stolen afternoons fishing farm ponds and mining pits for bluegills.
Wish you luck in your search.
