Paint for a Glass Rod?
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:02:54 AM »
I have an old glass rod I would like to repaint, any suggestions on what kind of paint to use? The rod really isn't worth anything but I would like to refurbish it just to see if I can. It will need to be repainted , new guides , new grip and a real seat. I have everything but the paint. I have no idea what kind of paint would be best for this task. I want to practice on a cheap rod first.

I have never painted a rod before, so not sure. I would have to say something along the lines that is flexable and actually bonds to the blank. Krylon Fusion might be a good choice. If you don't mind a matte finish, you could also use rc car paint. if bonds to lexan car bodies and is flexable. Sure someone on here has done this before and will chime in anytime.

One of our WarmFly regulars does a lot of work on both new blanks and old rods and is familiar with fiberglass rods.  Hopefully he will chime in before too long.

I painted a fiberglass rod for RevTCF.  It was an old blue garcia.  I used a paint found in hobby stores to paint the plastic hobby racing cars.  I kept a can somewhere but its location is well hidden  >:( the great thing about this paint is that it flexes.  There are some wild colors also.  I put the rod on my rod turner and sprayed it turning.  It would be interesting to hear from Jerry as to how well it held up.

I was thinkin Canary Yellow since the rod was originally yellow or I might just have to change everything and try Royal Blue (my favorite color) or just go crazy and try Fire Orange. :o

Nope think I'll stay with Yellow.  ;)   maybe

The paint that is used on the RC car bodies is PACTRA. I have never seen it at Hobby Lobby, But any local Hobby store that sells or races the cars will have it. Hobbytown USA is one such store. As well as Tower Hobbies online. Here is a link.

I am in no way affiliated with any of the companies listed here. Just used to race and play with the RC Cars until I was about 35 or so.
