new fly
« on: February 29, 2012, 04:30:09 PM »
I'm looking for a mosquito larva fly. I've got a couple of ideas, and saw one somewhere, but don't remember where. Should be killer on 'gills.

That is a great little pattern, I've never seen anything like it.  I was going to say something like a zebra midge.

Not that I am in the same league as most her but, I think if you tied that in reverse on a size 22 with a touch of foam or something to make it float tail up it would be killer on Afins Gambusia. ;D
 Sorry I couldent help myself!

An easy larvae for gills is to do black floss with a silver wire wrap on a scud hook. Use a piece of foam cut from a 1/8" cylinder like a bead.  The piece of foam needs to be very small and you can overwrap it with thread, just don't squeeze the air out of it.  The goal, at least for me, was to get them where they just barely missed floating.
They can be very effective, but they also don't deter the real small perch either.

Just put "midge pattern" in Bing or Google and you'll get all you want.

Thanks, guys! That first one looked easy, and I thought of a foam or floating plastic head. I'm thinking of something that hangs hook down in the water.
