Second Kayak
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:35:54 AM »
I have been out 4 times with my Pescador and I love it. I met Clifford on the water and he kindly took a picture of me. Fishing was very slow, there was an additional kayaker who landed a nice bass as I arrived and Clifford boated a couple of bass.

This was my best of the few caught that fell victim to the Briminator.

Well Linecaster, seems the new 'yak and you get along well. Nice looking yak and the bream looked very healthy. Take care and enjoy the yak, John.

Nice hat and nice belly on the bream.  Lil thieves have been grabbing my flies while the gilgamesh gobbules are looking. It is a post spawn thing I guess.

This is my experiment on my newly acquired kayak, for a 2 anchor system without drilling holes and using available stock of weight lifting materials ;D
The S carabiners were bought initially for the trolley system so instead of buying new cleats which would require drilling holes I used these. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

The front anchor

The back anchor

Only problem is the loose remainders to tangle with everything ;D

The front weight is clear of the water as would be the rear.

I took mine off because of those tangles; that and I had a big bass on and the line got hung up in the forward carabinder and me  being neither agile or mobile the fish got off.  I told my son who was fishin with me the bass had to weigh 9 pounds, but I might have added 5 or 6 pounds since there was no way he could prove the truth ;D ;D ;D

Yes the biggest ones always seem to get away.Happened to me before ;D

Even with the trolley I have spare line in the 'yak. Other than the dog leash mentioned by Qualey there does not seem to be an answer ???

Be careful with that type of nylon rope. The sun will deteriorate it unmercifully. Then, when you pull it, you will get nylon splinters in your hands. (ouchy oochie) Walmart sells a good quality dock line in a couple diameters which is much more resisant to sun damage and may even be smoother to run through your s-clips which look kinda sharp and could cause the same fraying with that type line. Looks like a good anchor system though. Nice looking kayak you got there too.

Thank you for the advice on the rope, so far no problems. The S clips are sharp I will see how they perform over time. Might have to get regular cleats.
I weigh 240lbs and was worried that I would be too heavy for the kayak but I think it meets with what I wanted.
If I were to go camping and had to carry a lot of kit then the Ocean Kayak would be better, but it is heavier. This kayak is easy to handle and I am happy, thanks or you comments.

Guess I'll add my 2 cents in on the anchor talk.  I have the same basic thing on 2 of my yaks and it works great.  Basically, I use a 3 lb rubber coated dumbell and a retractable dog leash.  One little trick I do is to run the line through some plastic air line tubing.  this way I can route it where I want to and it isn't cutting into my plastic.  I think a guy could use copper tubing as well and it may actually be a little better if you need to make several turns.  The dumbell retrieves way up out of the water so it doesn't add any drag when moving.

There's only been one time that I wished I had more weight and that was on a big Minnesota lake with whitecaps.  Probably shouldn't have been out there though :-\  The dog leash stores the line well and the thin line is way more strength than what is needed for a kayak.

excellent reel - great idea.

another idea is just a simple rope winder
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=rope+winder&hl=en&prmd=ivns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1152&bih=773&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11133701829548021672&sa=X&ei=4X41Tt3WE4G5twfB3vGBDQ&ved=0CFQQ8wIwAA#scoring=tp

I use a drift sock more often than an anchor, though I do have a 3-lb. fluked type.

I love my zig-zag cleat.  I can use it for 3 lines at once.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is

You are the second person to mention dumbells and dog leashes, Qualey said the same thing but if I remember correctly he went up to 5lb on the dumbells. The only drilling I see from you is the goody holding the line/tube central I guess rear and front? I am getting the feeling that I will go this route, thanks.

Ron that zig zag cleat is interesting. Would the winder that you referenced lie loose in the kayak?

yeah, a winder is just a place to store the line to keep it from spreading out.  Still, a 6"-square device is a lot less tangle than a pile of line spreading out on the deck.

The only holes I drilled for the anchor system are the 2 for the pad eye at the back of the boat.  The 2 eyes in the tank well were factory installed for the bungies.  The line reel is zip-tyed to the back of the seat.
