Foil poppers and sliders, my first
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:55:42 AM »
These aren't the traditional, long pencil poppers; don't have the long hooks and didn't feel like extending with leader wire so, I just tied some long tails. Foil heads are a lot quicker than painting but still fun to do.

Nice job Kirk,

Michael Verduin did some at one of the Lufkin events.  Amazing how it works.

Is this foil over balsa or over foam?  What glue are you using to apply the foil?  Any coating over it?  I played with this a few years ago and gave it up as too time-intensive, but I love the look.

Whatever the method of construction or techniques used to apply color, poppers are among
the more time intensive of flies in their creation.

Here is a link to one of the best and in depth Step-By-Step descriptions of how to make foil
balsa pencil poppers that I have ever seen on the Internet.  It was put together by Dirk Burton
of Baton Rouge, La. who is also known for several woven flies such as the Tussle Bug.

Rubber cement is most often used to bond the foil to the under body. A knurling tool is used
to create the scale effect before the rubber cement completely dries.

Stippled, that is a good link, thanks for posting it.

Bob, I never tried foam or heard of anyone doing so. I think the balsa works because it is soft enough to give a little but still holds the impression. As for glue, I used a permanent type glue stick. These are a lot less time intensive than the painted bodies I do. I overcoat with the 30 minute cure epoxy.

Thanks Les.

I want to see more.
