I suppose all kids are a little different, but my experience with a son and 2 grandsons and a granddaughter is that they tend to concentrate on one thing at a time.  When they're in sports that is their focus, and so it goes up to 16.  At 16 nothing gets in the way of cars and girls and then a couple of years later they're back. ;D.

Fishing Reports / First fish on vintage Fenwick
« Last post by goflies on Today at 10:52:04 AM »
It's always a good omen to break in a rod right, and although the Fenwick glass 6-weight I just got from Gary Troutman isn't exactly new, it's new to me.  First bass, on a size 8 olive Hellcraw meant for bream, was a 4-11 fish that probably was 6 pounds a month ago before spawning.  Then this morning saw the year's first schooling fish.  On the same rod throwing a shad pattern swimming baitfish, I picked up a dozen fish anywhere from 12 inches to 2 pounds.  Gotta love those old Feralites!

Kirk - incredible pics. That top long bait is amazing.
Love seeing the throw back eyes from Walt's stuff. AWESOME work. Look forward to the book as well.

I also have two sons... one who lives to hunt and fish and the other who will hunt and fish, if it is not to inconvenient...

They come out that way, and you are correct in not forcing 'em.  When you take kids fishing, you must always remember that it is about the kids and what they want...not what you would like or want to do, and  always let them take the lead on when to take a break from fishing (even if the fish are bitin' like crazy!).

Plus,I think that it is always good to get them a little "treat" when they go... My dad always stopped for Frosty Root Beers and peanuts... Still love 'em!

SAGE advice...I have four and have tried not to push the things I love on any of them...slowly but surely my 14 and 12 have become almost as excited as I am about fishing. The oldest is years ahead in technique and basic stuff while my the others are still experimenting. But we always make sure to stop and get something rewarding - mostly to bring back memories of me and my dad!  ;) Good stuff guys...

Yeah, I like the other ideas and experiences sharing my test promoted to come out.
Man, believe it or not, I know some very seasoned and experienced fly fishers that bought some of the Zaggin Zooks at $20 a pop and said they were extremely disappointed in its action and don't bother using them; said it was a waste of money. Just sayin...

Fishing Reports / First time out this year
« Last post by Stu Thompson on May 22, 2013, 07:33:15 PM »
Yep the trip I always look forward to each year. Went out with my son this past weekend and what a riot. This is actually a trout trip but this year we went to a lake that had Pike and Walleye in it. Saturday we went for trout and managed to get quite a few (well my son Kevin did anyway). I landed 17 Rainbow and Splake(cross between a Lake Trout and a Brookie) from 16-19 inches and even managed a 12 inch Perch. Kevin meanwhile caught 28 Rainbows and Splake from 15-20 inches. All the fish were taken on a tan DDH Minnow.
On Sunday we fished the Pike lake under some really windy conditions and landed 5 Pike from 21-27 inches. Kind of small considering we had perfect water temps but that wind was a killer gusting from 40-60 KMs per hour. Kicking a float tube at my age in those conditions just plum wore me out. All in all it was a great weekend and my son has won the annual bet again!!!!! A couple of pics from the weekend, hey even a perch my son caught made it in there.
