I made a trip to City Park and Bayou St. John before attending the New Orleans Fly Fishers general meeting tonight.  I caught COUNTLESS numbers of Rio Grande perch in the City Park lagoon.  Later, I crossed over Esplanade and fished Bayou St. John.  While chatting with a young lady and her daughter walking along the bayou, I had my back turned to the tip of my rod and fly line.  I felt my rod twitch.  When I look back, my line was stripping off my reel and headed to the center of the Bayou.  When I finally stripped in the fish it was a 9 ½” Rio Grande!  It felt like a big bass on the end of my 1 weight!  He was definitely a STUMP KNOCKER!

Those are beautiful fish & one of these days/years, I'm gonna get down that way to tangle with 'em.
Thanks for sharing.....nice pics.

Good going, Larry.  They are built for fighting.  They're like one big tail fin.  Do they do the flat spins like the big bluegills?

Awesome, Uncle Larry! Those are some cool fish. That big, fat, forehead on that one displays that it is a breeding-age adult. I could not tell you male or female, but if you ever see them on their beds, both parents are very protective of their young. They constantly surround their ball of fry. These fish are a true treasures, in my eyes, here in the Southern Gulf Coast (Centeral Texas in my case) areas of the USA.

Thanks for the report. I'm going there with my fishing buddy tomorrow.

What flies work best for those fish?

I caught the big one with a chartreuse and black Jitterbee.  Caught a lot on my Warm Fly pattern.

I hit City Park after work today, from about 5:20-6:30pm.  I was focused mainly on finding shade to stand in while casting - it was hot. I managed 2 Rios out of 8-10 bites.  I was using my 8 wt. again Embarrassed, and the hardest part of the trip was fitting my 12lb. tapered saltwater leader through the eye of my tiny Ladybug.  Man I need a 4wt. I think the lighter rod would give me MUCH better feel for those little bites.

I work in the French Quarter so City Park can be on the way home if I want it to be Wink. I think I will try and stop there once a week on my way home.

Does any one know if Alec at Uptown Angler in NOLA has jitterbees or is it mainly a saltwater selection?

Judging by the reel seat, it appears to be an Orvis Superfine 7'6 1wt.
